Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRDJ JSTUVWFXYSZA2B2As I reach to close each book | A |
lying open on my desk it leaps up | B |
to snap at my fingers My legs | C |
won t hold me I must sit down | D |
My fingers pain me | E |
where the thick leaves snapped together | F |
at my touch | G |
All my life | H |
I ve held books in my hands | I |
like children carefully turning | J |
their pages and straightening out | K |
their creases I use books | L |
almost apologetically I believe | M |
I often think their thoughts for them | N |
Reading I never know where theirs leave off | O |
and mine begin I am so much alone | P |
in the world I can observe the stars | Q |
or study the breeze I can count the steps | R |
on a stair on the way up or down | D |
and I can look at another human being | J |
and get a smile knowing | J |
it is for the sake of politeness | S |
Nothing must be said of estrangement | T |
among the human race and yet | U |
nothing is said at all | V |
because of that | W |
But no book will help either | F |
I stroke my desk | X |
its wood so smooth so patient and still | Y |
I set a typewriter on its surface | S |
and begin to type | Z |
to tell myself my troubles | A2 |
Against the evidence I live by choice | B2 |
