The Next Poem Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE GHIH JKLK MNON PQRQ BSTS ABUB

How much better it seems nowA
than when it is finally doneB
the unforgettable first lineC
the cunning way the stanzas runB
-
The rhymes soft spoken and suggestiveD
are barely audible at firstE
an appetite not yet acknowledgedF
like the inkling of a thirstE
-
While gradually the form appearsG
as each line is coaxed aloudH
the architecture of a roomI
seen from the middle of a crowdH
-
The music that of common speechJ
but slanted so that each detailK
sounds unexpected as a sharpL
inserted in a simple scaleK
-
No jumble box of imageryM
dumped glumly in the reader's lapN
or elegantly packaged junkO
the unsuspecting must unwrapN
-
But words that could direct a friendP
precisely to an unknown placeQ
those few unshakeable detailsR
that no confusion can eraseQ
-
And the real subject left unspokenB
but unmistakable to thoseS
who don't expect a jungle parrotT
in the black and white of proseS
-
How much better it seems nowA
than when it is finally writtenB
How hungrily one waits to feelU
the bright lure seized the old hook bittenB
