Summer Storm Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE GHIH JKLK MNON PHQH RFAF STUT VWXY

We stood on the rented patioA
While the party went on insideB
You knew the groom from collegeC
I was a friend of the brideB
-
We hugged the brownstone wall behind usD
To keep our dress clothes dryE
And watched the sudden summer stormF
Floodlit against the skyE
-
The rain was like a waterfallG
Of brilliant beaded lightH
Cool and silent as the starsI
The storm hid from the nightH
-
To my surprise you took my armJ
A gesture you didn't explainK
And we spoke in whispers as if we twoL
Might imitate the rainK
-
Then suddenly the storm recededM
As swiftly as it cameN
The doors behind us opened upO
The hostess called your nameN
-
I watched you merge into the groupP
Aloof and yet politeH
We didn't speak another wordQ
Except to say goodnightH
-
Why does that evening's memoryR
Return with this night's stormF
A party twenty years agoA
Its disappointments warmF
-
There are so many might have beensS
What ifs that won't stay buriedT
Other cities other jobsU
Strangers we might have marriedT
-
And memory insists on piningV
For places it never wentW
As if life would be happierX
Just by being differentY
