Litany Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDBEFGFBHICB JBIKLBC MNFOP M BFQRBSB SBSSBSJ

This is a litany of lost thingsA
a canon of possessions dispossessedB
a photograph an old address a keyC
It is a list of words to memorizeD
or to forget of amo amas amatB
the conjugations of a dead tongueE
in which the final sentence has been spokenF
This is the liturgy of rainG
falling on mountain field and oceanF
indifferent anonymous completeB
of water infinitesimally slowH
sifting through rock pooling in darknessI
gathering in springs then rising without our agencyC
only to dissolve in mist or cloud or dewB
-
This is a prayer to unbeliefJ
to candles guttering and darkness undividedB
to incense drifting into emptinessI
It is the smile of a stone MadonnaK
and the silent fury of the consecrated wineL
a benediction on the death of a young godB
brave and beautiful rotting on a treeC
-
This is a litany to earth and ashesM
to the dust of roads and vacant roomsN
to the fine silt circling in a shaft of sunF
settling indifferently on books and bedsO
This is a prayer to praise what we becomeP
'Dust thou art to dust thou shalt return '-
Savor its taste the bitterness of earth and ashesM
-
This is a prayer inchoate and unfinishedB
for you my love my loss my lesionF
a rosary of words to count out time'sQ
illusions all the minutes hours daysR
the calendar compounds as if the pastB
existed somewhere like an inheritanceS
still waiting to be claimedB
-
Until at last it is our litany mon vieuxS
my reader my voyeur as if the mistB
steaming from the gorge this pure paradoxS
the shattered river rising as it fallsS
splintering the light swirling it skywardB
neither transparent nor opaque but luminousS
even as it vanishes were not our lifeJ
