California Hills In August Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDE FGHIJ KLMNO PQKRS QTUVW

I can imagine someone who foundA
these fields unbearable who climbedB
the hillside in the heat cursing the dustC
cracking the brittle weeds underfootD
wishing a few more trees for shadeE
-
An Easterner especially who would scornF
the meagerness of summer the dryG
twisted shapes of black elmH
scrub oak and chaparral a landscapeI
August has already drained of greenJ
-
One who would hurry over the clingingK
thistle foxtail golden poppyL
knowing everything was just a weedM
unable to conceive that these treesN
and sparse brown bushes were aliveO
-
And hate the bright stillness of the noonP
without wind without motionQ
the only other living thingK
a hawk hungry for prey suspendedR
in the blinding sunlit blueS
-
And yet how gentle it seems to someoneQ
raised in a landscape short of rainT
the skyline of a hill broken by no moreU
trees than one can count the grassV
the empty sky the wish for waterW
