BENEATH the flat and paper skyA
The sun a demon's eyeA
Glowed through the air that mask of glassB
All wand'ring sounds that passB
-
Seemed out of tune as if the lightC
Were fiddle strings pulled tightC
The market square with spire and bellD
Clanged out the hour in HellD
-
The busy chatter of the heatE
Shrilled like a parakeetE
And shuddering at the noonday lightC
The dust lay dead and whiteC
-
As powder on a mummy's faceF
Or fawned with simian graceF
Round booths with many a hard bright toyG
And wooden brittle joyG
-
The cap and bells of Time the ClownH
That jangling whistled downH
Young cherubs hidden in the guiseI
Of every bird that fliesI
-
And star bright masks for youth to wearJ
Lest any dream that fareJ
Bright pilgrim past our ken should seeK
Hints of RealityK
-
Upon the sharp set grass shrill greenL
Tall trees like rattles leanL
And jangle sharp and dissilyD
But when night falls they signM
-
Till Pierrot moon steals slyly inN
His face more white than sinN
Black masked and with cool touch lays bareJ
Each cherry plum and pearJ
-
Then underneath the veiled eyesI
Of houses darkness liesI
Tall houses like a hopeless prayerJ
They cleave the sly dumb airJ
-
Blind are those houses paper thinN
Old shadows hid thereinN
With sly and crazy movements creepO
Like marionettes and weepO
-
Tall windows show InfinityK
And hard realityK
The candles weep and pry and danceP
Like lives mocked at by ChanceP
-
The rooms are vast as Sleep withinN
When once I ventured inN
Chill Silence like a surging seaK
Slowly enveloped meK
