Embankment At Night, Before The War: Charity Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDE A ABCDE F EGHIJ K EGHIJ L

By the riverA
In the black wet night as the furtive rain slinks downB
Dropping and starting from sleepC
Alone on a seatD
A woman crouchesE
-
I must go back to herA
-
I want to give herA
Some money Her hand slips out of the breast of her gownB
Asleep My fingers creepC
Carefully over the sweetD
Thumb mound into the palm's deep pouchesE
-
So the giftF
-
God how she startsE
And looks at me and looks in the palm of her handG
And again at meH
I turn and runI
Down the Embankment run for my lifeJ
-
But why whyK
-
Because of my heart'sE
Beating like sobs I come to myself and standG
In the street spilled over splendidlyH
With wet flat lights What I've doneI
I know not my soul is in strifeJ
-
The touch was on the quick I want to forgetL
