Ah stern cold manA
How can you lie so relentless hardB
While I wash you with weeping waterC
Do you set your face against the daughterC
Of life Can you never discardB
Your curt pride's banA
-
You masqueraderC
How can you shame to act this partD
Of unswerving indifference to meE
You want at last ah meE
To break my heartD
EvaderC
-
You know your mouthF
Was always sooner to softenG
Even than your eyesH
Now shut it liesH
Relentless however oftenG
I kiss it in drouthF
-
It has no breathF
Nor any relaxing WhereC
Where are you what have you doneG
What is this mouth of stoneI
How did you dareC
Take cover in deathF
-
II-
-
Once you could seeE
The white moon show like a breast revealedJ
By the slipping shawl of starsK
Could see the small stars trembleL
As the heart beneath did wieldJ
Systole diastoleE
-
All the lovely macrocosmE
Was woman once to youM
Bride to your groomE
No tree in bloomE
But it leaned you a newM
White bosomE
-
And always and everC
Soft as a summering treeE
Unfolds from the sky for your goodN
Unfolded womanhoodN
Shedding you down as a treeE
Sheds its flowers on a riverC
-
I saw your browsO
Set like rocks beside a sea of gloomE
And I shed my very soul down into your thoughtP
Like flowers I fell to be caughtQ
On the comforted pool like bloomE
That leaves the boughsO
-
III-
-
Oh masqueraderC
With a hard face white enamelledQ
What are you nowR
Do you care no longer howR
My heart is trammelledQ
EvaderC
-
Is this you after allS
Metallic obdurateQ
With bowels of steelT
Did you never feelT
Cold insensateQ
MechanicalL
-
Ah no you multiformE
You that I loved you wonderfulL
You who darkened and shoneI
You were many men in oneG
But never this nullL
This never warmE
-
Is this the sum of youM
Is it all noughtQ
Cold metal coldQ
Are you all toldQ
Here iron wroughtQ
Is this what's become of youM
