Through the strait gate of passionA
Between the bickering fireB
Where flames of fierce love trembleC
On the body of fierce desireB
-
To the intoxicationA
The mind fused down like a beadD
Flees in its agitationA
The flames' stiff speedD
-
At last to calm incandescenceE
Burned clean by remorseless hateF
Now at the day's renascenceE
We approach the gateF
-
Now from the darkened spacesE
Of fear and of frightened facesE
Death in our awful embracesE
Approached and passed byG
-
We near the flame burnt porchesE
Where the brands of the angels like torchesE
Whirl in these perilous marchesE
Pausing to sighG
-
We look back on the withering rosesE
The stars in their sun dimmed closesE
Where 'twas given us to repose usE
Sure on our sanctityH
-
Beautiful candid loversE
Burnt out of our earthy coversE
We might have nestled like ploversE
In the fields of eternityH
-
There sure in sinless beingI
All seen and then all seeingI
In us life unto death agreeingI
We might have lainJ
-
But we storm the angel guardedK
Gates of the long discardedL
Garden which God has hoardedL
Against our painJ
-
The Lord of Hosts and the DevilC
Are left on Eternity's levelC
Field and as victors we travelC
To Eden homeM
-
Back beyond good and evilC
Return we Eve dishevelC
Your hair for the bliss drenched revelC
On our primal loamM
