A thick mist sheet lies over the broken wheatA
I walk up to my neck in mist holding my mouth upB
Across there a discoloured moon burns itself outC
-
I hold the night in horrorD
I dare not turn roundE
-
To night I have left her aloneF
They would have it I have left her for everD
-
Oh my God how it achesG
Where she is cut off from meH
-
Perhaps she will go back to EnglandI
Perhaps she will go backJ
Perhaps we are parted for everD
-
If I go on walking through the whole breadth of GermanyH
I come to the North Sea or the BalticK
-
Over there is Russia Austria Switzerland France in a circleL
I here in the undermist on the Bavarian roadM
-
It aches in meH
What is England or France far offN
But a name she might takeO
I don't mind this continent stretching the sea far awayP
It aches in me for herD
Like the agony of limbs cut off and achingQ
Not even longingQ
It is only agonyH
-
A crippleL
Oh God to be mutilatedR
To be a crippleL
-
And if I never see her againS
-
I think if they told me soT
I could convulse the heavens with my horrorD
I think I could alter the frame of things in my agonyH
I think I could break the System with my heartU
I think in my convulsion the skies would breakO
-
She too suffersV
But who could compel her if she chose me against them allW
She has not chosen me finally she suspends her choiceX
Night folk Tuatha De Danaan dark Gods govern her sleepY
Magnificent ghosts of the darkness carry off her decision in sleepY
Leave her no choice make her lapse me ward make herD
Oh Gods of the living Darkness powers of NightZ
