CharityA
-
By the riverB
In the black wet night as the furtive rain slinks downC
Dropping and starting from sleepD
Alone on a seatE
A woman crouchesF
-
I must go back to herB
-
I want to give herB
Some money Her hand slips out of the breast of her gownC
Asleep My fingers creepD
Carefully over the sweetE
Thumb mound into the palm's deep pouchesF
-
So the giftG
-
God how she startsF
And looks at me and looks in the palm of her handH
And again at meA
I turn and runI
Down the Embankment run for my lifeJ
-
But why whyK
-
Because of my heart'sF
Beating like sobs I come to myself and standH
In the street spilled over splendidlyA
With wet flat lights What I've doneI
I know not my soul is in strifeJ
-
The touch was on the quick I want to forgetL
