The actor they'd brought in to entertain themA
also recited a few choice epigramsB
The room opened out on the gardenC
and the delicate odour of flowersB
mingled with the scentD
of the five perfumed young SidoniansB
There were readings from Meleager Krinagoras RhianosB
But when the actor recitedE
'Here lies Aeschylus the Athenian son of Euphorion'C
stressing maybe more than he should haveF
'his renowned valour' and 'sacred Marathonian grove'F
a vivacious young man mad about literatureG
suddenly jumped up and saidH
'I don't like that quatrain at allI
Sentiments of that kind seem somehow weakJ
Give I say all your strength to your workK
make it your total concern And don't forget your workK
even in times of stress or when you begin to declineC
This is what I expect what I demand of youL
and not that you completely dismiss from your mindM
the magnificent art of your tragediesB
your Agamemnon your marvellous PrometheusB
your representations of Orestes and CassandraN
your Seven Against Thebes merely to set down for yourO
memorialP
that as an ordinary soldier one of the herdQ
you too fought against Datis and Artaphernis 'R
