Two Young Men, 23 To 24 Years Old Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGAHIEJKLMNOOPD QROSQTUVKW

He'd been sitting in the cafe since ten thirtyA
expecting him to turn up any minuteB
Midnight had gone and he was still waiting for himC
It was now after one thirty and the cafe was almost desertedD
He'd grown tired of reading newspapersE
mechanically Of his three lonely shillingsF
only one was left waiting that longG
he'd spent the others on coffees and brandyA
And he'd smoked all his cigarettesH
So much waiting had worn him outI
Because alone like that for so many hoursE
he'd also begun to have disturbing thoughtsJ
about the immoral life he was livingK
But when he saw his friend come inL
weariness boredom thought all disappeared at onceM
His friend brought unexpected newsN
He'd won sixty pounds playing cardsO
Their good looks their exquisite youthfulnessO
the sensitive love they sharedP
were refreshed livened invigoratedD
by the sixty pounds from the card tableQ
Now all joy and vitality feeling and charmR
they went not to the homes of their respectable familiesO
where they were no longer wanted anywayS
they went to a familiar and very specialQ
house of debauchery and they asked for a bedroomT
and expensive drinks and they drank againU
And when the expensive drinks were finishedV
and it was close to four in the morningK
happy they gave themselves to loveW
