Zeus mourns deeplyA
Patroklos has killed SarpedonB
Now Patroklos and the Achaians rush onB
to snatch up the body to dishonour itC
But Zeus doesn't tolerate that at allD
Though he let his favourite child be killedE
this the Law requiredF
he'll at least honour him after deathG
So he now sends Apollo down to the plainB
with instructions about how the body should be tendedH
Apollo reverently raises the hero's bodyA
and carries it in sorrow to the riverI
He washes the dust and blood awayJ
heals the terrible wounds so there's no trace leftK
pours perfume of ambrosia over itC
and dresses it in radiant Olympian robesL
He bleaches the skin and with a pearl combM
combs out the jet black hairN
He spreads and arranges the beautiful limbsO
Now he looks like a young king a royal charioteerN
twenty five or twenty six years oldP
resting himself after winningQ
the prize in a famous raceR
his chariot all gold and his horses the fastestS
Having finished his task this wayJ
Apollo calls for the two brothersT
Sleep and Death and orders themU
to take the body to Lykia the rich countryN
So the two brothers Sleep and DeathG
set off on foot toward the rich country LykiaQ
and when they reached the doorN
of the king's palaceV
they handed over the honoured bodyN
and then returned to their other concernsW
And once the body was received in the palaceV
the sad burial began with processions and honours and dirgesV
with many libations from sacred vesselsV
with all pomp and circumstanceV
Then skilled workers from the cityN
and celebrated craftsmen in stoneB
came to make the tombstone and the tombX
