The Footsteps Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCADE FGHAHIJKKLMNKK

Eagles of coralA
adorn the ebony bedB
where Nero lies fast asleepC
callous happy peacefulA
in the prime of his body's strengthD
in the fine vigour of youthE
-
But in the alabaster hall that holdsF
the ancient shrine of the AenobarbiG
how restless the household deitiesH
The little gods trembleA
and try to hide their insignificant bodiesH
They've heard a terrible soundI
a deadly sound coming up the stairsJ
iron footsteps that shake the staircaseK
and faint with fear the miserable LaresK
scramble to the back of the shrineL
shoving each other and stumblingM
one little god falling over anotherN
because they know what kind of sound that isK
know by now the footsteps of the FuriesK
