Rhyme Scheme: AABCDEFBEGAHIJKHLHMA KNAOJKThe young poet Evmenis | A |
complained one day to Theocritus | A |
I've been writing for two years now | B |
and I've composed only one idyll | C |
It's my single completed work | D |
I see sadly that the ladder | E |
of Poetry is tall extremely tall | F |
and from this first step I'm standing on now | B |
I'll never climb any higher | E |
Theocritus retorted Words like that | G |
are improper blasphemous | A |
Just to be on the first step | H |
should make you happy and proud | I |
To have reached this point is no small achievement | J |
what you've done already is a wonderful thing | K |
Even this first step | H |
is a long way above the ordinary world | L |
To stand on this step | H |
you must be in your own right | M |
a member of the city of ideas | A |
And it's a hard unusual thing | K |
to be enrolled as a citizen of that city | N |
Its councils are full of Legislators | A |
no charlatan can fool | O |
To have reached this point is no small achievement | J |
what you've done already is a wonderful thing | K |
