The Displeasure Of Selefkidis Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJHEKBLMMABN OPQRSTKGUVWX

Dimitrios Selefkidis was displeasedA
to learn that a PtolemyB
had reached Italy in such a squalid stateC
poorly dressed and on footD
only three or four slaves This wayE
their dynasty will become a jokeF
the laughter of RomeG
Selefkidis of course knowsH
that basically even now they've become something likeI
servantsJ
to the Romans he also knowsH
that the Romans give and take awayE
their thrones arbitrarily as they pleaseK
But they should maintain a certain dignityB
at least in their appearanceL
they shouldn't forget that they are still kingsM
are still alas called kingsM
This is why Dimitrios Selefkidis was displeasedA
and right away he offered PtolemyB
purple robes a magnificent diademN
precious jewels numerous servants and retainersO
his most expensive horsesP
so that he might present himself at Rome as he shouldQ
as an Alexandrian Greek monarchR
But Ptolemy who'd come to begS
knew his business and refused it allT
he didn't have the slightest need for these luxuriesK
Shabbily dressed humble he entered RomeG
put himself up in the house of a minor artisanU
and then presented himselfV
as a poor ill fated creature to the SenateW
in order to make his begging more effectiveX
