Returning From Greece Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABACDEFAAG HIAAJ AAKAAILMNO APQAG

Well we're nearly there HermipposA
Day after tomorrow it seems that's what the captain saidB
At least we're sailing our seasA
the waters of our own countries Cyprus Syria EgyptC
waters we know and loveD
Why so silent Ask your heartE
didn't you too feel happierF
the further we got from GreeceA
What's the point of fooling ourselvesA
That wouldn't be properly Greek would itG
-
It's time we admitted the truthH
we're Greeks also what else are weI
but with Asiatic tastes and feelingsA
tastes and feelingsA
sometimes alien to HellenismJ
-
It isn't correct Hermippos for us philosophersA
to be like some of our petty kingsA
remember how we laughed at themK
when they used to come to our lecturesA
who through their showy Hellenified exteriorsA
Macedonian exteriors naturallyI
let a bit of Arabia peep out now and thenL
a bit of Media they can't keep backM
And to what laughable lengths the fools wentN
trying to cover it upO
-
No that's not at all correct for usA
For Greeks like us that kind of pettiness won't doP
We simply can't be ashamedQ
of the Syrian and Egyptian blood in our veinsA
we should really honour it delight in itG
