On The Outskirts Of Antioch Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AB BCDEF BGFH IGJF KLFFFLMN GJ FJJO P QFFFR

We in Antioch were astonished when we heardA
what Julian was up to nowB
-
Apollo had made things clear to him at DaphniB
he didn't want to give an oracle as though we caredC
he didn't intend to speak prophetically unlessD
his temple at Daphni was purified firstE
The nearby dead he declared got on his nervesF
-
There are many tombs at DaphniB
One of those buried thereG
was the triumphant and holy martyr VavylasF
wonder and glory of our churchH
-
It was him the false god hinted at him he fearedI
As long as he felt him near he didn't dareG
pronounce his oracle not a murmurJ
The false gods are terrified of our martyrsF
-
Unholy Julian got worked upK
lost his temper and shouted Raise him carry him outL
take him away immediately this VavylasF
You there do you hear He gets on Apollo's nervesF
Grab him raise him at onceF
dig him out take him away throw him outL
take him wherever you want This isn't a jokeM
Apollo said the temple has to be purifiedN
-
We took it the holy relic and carried it elsewhereG
We took it we carried it away in love and in honorJ
-
And hasn't the temple done brilliantly sinceF
In no time at all a colossal fireJ
broke out a terrible fireJ
and both the temple and Apollo burned to nothingO
-
Ashes the idol dirt to be swept awayP
-
Julian exploded and he spread it aroundQ
what else could he do that we the ChristiansF
had set the fire Let him say soF
It hasn't been proved Let him say soF
The essential thing is he explodedR
