Kaisarion Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFFGDD AHIJ KILMNDLBODPQRHBD

Partly to throw light on a certain periodA
partly to kill an hour or twoB
last night I picked up and readC
a volume of inscriptions about the PtolemiesD
The lavish praise and flattery are much the sameE
for each of them All are brilliantF
glorious mighty benevolentF
everything they undertake is full of wisdomG
As for the women of their line the Berenices and CleopatrasD
they too all of them are marvelousD
-
When I'd verified the facts I wantedA
I would have put the book away had not a briefH
insignificant mention of King KaisarionI
suddenly caught my eyeJ
-
And there you were with your indefinable charmK
Because we knowI
so little about you from historyL
I could fashion you more freely in my mindM
I made you good looking and sensitiveN
My art gives your faceD
a dreamy an appealing beautyL
And so completely did I imagine youB
that late last nightO
as my lamp went out I let it go out on purposeD
it seemed you came into my roomP
it seemed you stood there in front of me looking just as you would haveQ
in conquered AlexandriaR
pale and weary ideal in your griefH
still hoping they might take pity on youB
those scum who whispered Too many CaesarsD
