Julian At The Mysteries Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOLPQRS TUVKUWXOLYC

But when he found himself in darknessA
in the earth's awful depthsB
with a group of unholy GreeksC
and bodiless figures appeared before himD
with haloes of lightE
the young Julian for a moment lost his nerveF
an impulse from his pious years came backG
and he crossed himselfH
The Figures vanished at onceI
the haloes faded away the lights went outJ
The Greeks glanced at each otherK
The young man said 'Did you see the miracleL
I'm frightened friends I want to leaveM
Didn't you see how the demons vanishedN
the second they saw me make the holy sign of the cross 'O
The Greeks chuckled scornfullyL
'Shame on you shame to talk that wayP
to us sophists and philosophersQ
If you want to say things like thatR
say them to the Bishop of Nicomedia and his priestsS
The greatest gods of our glorious GreeceT
appeared before youU
And if they left don't think for a minuteV
that they were frightened by a gestureK
It was just that when they saw youU
making that vile that crude signW
their noble nature was disgustedX
and they left you in contempt 'O
This is what they said to him and the foolL
recovered from his holy blessed fearY
convinced by the unholy words of the GreeksC
