Herodis Attikos Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCDEBBFAG HIAAHAJKLHAEMHN

What glory this for Herodis AttikosA
Alexander of Selefkia one of our better sophistsA
on reaching Athens to lectureB
finds the city desertedC
because Herodis was in the country and all the young menD
had followed him there to hear himE
This makes sophist AlexanderB
write Herodis a letterB
begging him to send the Greeks backF
And the tactful Herodis answers at onceA
'Along with the Greeks I'm coming too 'G
-
How many young men now in AlexandriaH
in Antioch or BeirutI
being trained by Hellenism as its future oratorsA
meeting at choice banquetsA
where the talk is sometimes about fine sophistryH
sometimes about their exquisite love affairsA
suddenly find their attention wandering and fall silentJ
Their glasses untouchedK
they think about Herodis' fortuneL
what other sophist has been given this kind of honourH
Whatever his wish whatever he doesA
the Greeks the Greeks follow himE
not to criticize or debateM
not even to choose any longerH
only to followN
