Here on the pale beach in the darknessA
With the full moon just to riseB
They sit alone and look over the seaC
Or into each other's eyesB
-
She pokes her parasol into the sleepy sandD
Or sifts the lazy whiteness through her handD
-
'A lovely night ' he says 'the moonE
Comes up for you and meC
Just like a blind old spotlight thereF
Fizzing across the sea '-
-
She pays no heed nor even turns her headG
He slides his arm around her waist insteadG
-
'Why don't we do a sketch togetherH
Those songs you sing are swellI
Where did you get them anywayJ
They suit you awfully well '-
-
She will not turn to him will not resistK
Impassive she submits to being kissedK
-
'My husband wrote all four of themL
You know my husband drownedM
He was always sickly soon depressed '-
But still she hears the soundM
-
Of a stateroom door shut hard and footsteps goingN
Swiftly and steadily and the dark sea flowingN
-
She hears the dark sea flowing and sees his eyesB
Hollow with disenchantment sick surpriseB
-
And hate of her whom he had loved too wellI
She lowers her eyes demurely prods a shellI
-
'Yes We might do an act togetherH
That would be very nice '-
He kisses her passionately and thinksO
She's carnal but cold as iceP
