Now when the moon slid under the cloudA
And the cold clear dark of starlight fellB
He heard in his blood the well known bellB
Tolling slowly in heaves of soundC
Slowly beating slowly beatingD
Shaking its pulse on the stagnant airE
Sometimes it swung completely roundC
Horribly gasping as if for breathF
Falling down with an anguished cryG
Now the red bat he mused will flyG
Something is marked this night for deathF
And while he mused along his bloodH
Flew ghostly voices remote and thinI
They rose in the cavern of his brainJ
Like ghosts they died away againK
And hands upon his heart were laidL
And music upon his flesh was playedL
Until as he was bidden to doM
He walked the wood he so well knewM
Through the cold dew he moved his feetN
And heard far off as under the earthO
Discordant music in shuddering tonesP
Screams of laughter horrible mirthO
Clapping of hands and thudding of drumsQ
And the long drawn wail of one in painJ
To night he thought I shall die againK
We shall die again in the red eyed fireR
To meet on the edge of the wood beyondS
With the placid gaze of fed desireR
He walked and behind the whisper of treesT
In and out one walked with himU
She parted the branches and peered at himU
Through lowered lids her two eyes burnedV
He heard her breath he saw her handW
Wherever he turned his way she turnedV
Kept pace with him now fast now slowX
Moving her white knees as he movedY
This is the one I have always lovedZ
This is the one whose bat soul comesQ
To dance with me flesh to fleshA2
In the starlight dance of horns and drumsQ
-
The walls and roofs the scarlet towersB2
Sank down behind a rushing skyG
He heard a sweet song just begunC2
Abruptly shatter in tones and dieG
It whirled away Cold silence fellB
And again came tollings of a bellB

This air is alive with witches the white witch ridesD2
Swifter than smoke on the starlit windE2
In the clear darkness while the moon hidesD2
They come like dreams like something rememberedF2
Let us hurry beloved take my handW
Forget these things that trouble your eyesG2
Forget forget Our flesh is changedH2
Lighter than smoke we wreathe and riseG2
-
The cold air hisses between us Beloved belovedZ
What was the word you saidI2
Something about clear music that sang through waterR
I cannot remember The storm drops break on the leavesJ2
Something was lost in the darkness Someone is deadI2
Someone lies in the garden and grievesJ2
Look how the branches are tossed in this airE
Flinging their green to the earthO
Black clouds rush to devour the stars in the skyG
The moon stares down like a half closed eyeG
The leaves are scattered the birds are blownK2
Oaks crash down in the darknessL2
We run from our windy shadows we are running aloneK2

The moon was darkened across it flewM
The swift grey tenebrous shape he knewM
Like a thing of smoke it crossed the skyG
The witch he said And he heard a cryG
And another came and another cameM2
And one grown duskily red with bloodH
Floated an instant across the moonN2
Hung like a dull fantastic flameM2
The earth has veins they throb to nightO2
The earth swells warm beneath my feetN
The tips of the trees grow red and brightO2
The leaves are swollen I feel them beatN
They press together they push and sighG
They listen to hear the great bat cryG
The great red bat with the woman's faceP2
Hurry he said And pace for paceP2
That other who trod the dark with himU
Crushed the live leaves reached out white handsQ2
And closed her eyes the better to seeR2
The priests with claws the lovers with hoovesS2
The fire lit rock the sarabandsS2
I am here she said The bough he broke mdashA2
Was it the snapping bough that spokeT2
I am here she said The white thigh gleamedU2
Cold in starlight among dark leavesS2
The head thrown backward as he had dreamedU2
The shadowy red deep jasper mouthV2
And the lifted hands and the virgin breastsS2
Passed beside him and vanished awayW2
I am here she cried He answered 'Stay '-
And laughter arose and near and farX2
Answering laughter rose and diedY2
Who is there in the dark he criedY2
He stood in terror and heard a soundC
Of terrible hooves on the hollow groundC
They rushed were still a silence fellB
And he heard deep tollings of a bellB
-

Look beloved Why do you hide your faceS2
Look in the centre there above the fireR
They are bearing the boy who blasphemed loveZ2
They are playing a piercing music upon himU
With a bow of living wireR
The virgin harlot singsS2
She leans above the beautiful anguished bodyR2
And draws slow music from those stringsS2
They dance around him they fling red roses upon himU
They trample him with their naked feetN
His cries are lost in laughterR
Their feet grow dark with his blood they beat andA3
beatN
They dance upon him until he cries no moreB3
Have we not heard that cry beforeB3
Somewhere somewhereE
Beside a sea in the green eveningD
Beneath green clouds in a copper skyG
Was it you was it IG
They have quenched the fires they dance in the darknessS2
The satyrs have run among them to seize and tearE
Look he has caught one by the hairE
She screams and falls he bears her away with himU
And the night grows full of whistling wingsS2
Far off one voice serene and sweetN
Rises and singsS2
-
'By the clear waters where once I diedY2
In the calm evening bright with stars '-
Where have I heard these words Was it you who sang themC3
It was long agoX
Let us hurry beloved the hard hooves trampleD3
The treetops tremble and glowX
-
-
-
In the clear dark on silent wingsS2
The red bat hovers beneath her moonN2
She drops through the fragrant night and clingsS2
Fast in the shadow with hands like clawsS2
With soft eyes closed and mouth that feedsS2
To the young white flesh that warmly bleedsS2
The maidens circle in dance and raiseS2
From lifting throats a soft sung praiseS2
Their knees and breasts are white and bareE
They have hung pale roses in their hairE
Each of them as she dances byG
Peers at the blood with a narrowed eyeG
See how the red wing wraps him roundC
See how the white youth struggles in vainJ
The weak arms writhe in a soundless painJ
He writhes in the soft red veiny wingsS2
But still she whispers upon him and clingsS2
This is the secret feast of loveZ2
Look well look well before it diesS2
See how the red one trembles aboveZ2
See how quiet the white one liesS2
-
Wind through the trees and a voice is heardF2
Singing far off The dead leaves fallE3
'By the clear waters where once I diedY2
In the calm evening bright with starsS2
One among numberless avatarsS2
I wedded a mortal a mortal brideY2
And lay on the stones and gave my fleshA2
And entered the hunger of him I lovedZ
How shall I ever escape this meshA2
Or be from my lover's body removed '-
Dead leaves stream through the hurrying airE
And the maenads dance with flying hairE
-
-
-
The priests with hooves the lovers with hornsS2
Rise in the starlight one by oneC2
They draw their knives on the spurting throatsS2
They smear the column with blood of goatsS2
They dabble the blood on hair and lipsS2
And wait like stones for the moon's eclipseS2
They stand like stones and stare at the skyG
Where the moon leers down like a half closed eyeG
In the green moonlight still they standW
While wind flows over the darkened sandW
And brood on the soft forgotten thingsS2
That filled their shadowy yesterdaysS2
Where are the breasts the scarlet wingsS2
They gaze at each other with troubled gazeS2
And then as the shadow closes the moonN2
Shout and strike with their hooves the groundC
And rush through the dark and fill the nightO2
With a slowly dying clamor of soundC
There where the great walls crowd the starsS2
There by the black wind riven wallsS2
In a grove of twisted leafless treesS2
Who are these pilgrims who are theseS2
These three the one of whom stands uM
