The House Of Dust: Part 02: 05: Retrospect Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCA DEAEFA FGHAIHJIKK LAAMFA DNON PPBBO

Round white clouds roll slowly above the housetopsA
Over the clear red roofs they flow and passA
A flock of pigeons rises with blue wings flashingB
Rises with whistle of wings hovers an instantC
And settles slowly again on the tarnished grassA
-
And one old man looks down from a dusty windowD
And sees the pigeons circling about the fountainE
And desires once more to walk among those treesA
Lovers walk in the noontime by that fountainE
Pigeons dip their beaks to drink from the waterF
And soon the pond must freezeA
-
The light wind blows to his ears a sound of laughterF
Young men shuffle their feet loaf in the sunlightG
A girl's laugh rings like a silver bellH
But clearer than all these sounds is a sound he hearsA
More in his secret heart than in his ears mdashI
A hammer's steady crescendo like a knellH
He hears the snarl of pineboards under the planeJ
The rhythmic saw and then the hammer again mdashI
Playing with delicate strokes that sombre scaleK
And the fountain dwindles the sunlight seems to paleK
-
Time is a dream he thinks a destroying dreamL
It lays great cities in dust it fills the seasA
It covers the face of beauty and tumbles wallsA
Where was the woman he loved Where was his youthM
Where was the dream that burned his brain like fireF
Even a dream grows grey at last and fallsA
-
He opened his book once more beside the windowD
And read the printed words upon that pageN
The sunlight touched his hand his eyes moved slowlyO
The quiet words enchanted time and ageN
-
'Death is never an ending death is a changeP
Death is beautiful for death is strangeP
Death is one dream out of another flowingB
Death is a chorded music softly goingB
By sweet transition from key to richer keyO
Death is a meeting place of sea and sea '-
