Up high black walls up sombre terracesA
Clinging like luminous birds to the sides of cliffsB
The yellow lights went climbing towards the skyC
From high black walls gleaming vaguely with rainD
Each yellow light looked down like a golden eyeC
-
They trembled from coign to coign and tower to towerE
Along high terraces quicker than dream they flewF
And some of them steadily glowed and some soon vanishedG
And some strange shadows threwF
-
And behind them all the ghosts of thoughts went movingH
Restlessly moving in each lamplit roomI
From chair to mirror from mirror to fireE
From some the light was scarcely more than a gloomI
From some a dazzling desireE
-
And there was one beneath black eaves who thoughtJ
Combing with lifted arms her golden hairK
Of the lover who hurried towards her through the nightL
And there was one who dreamed of a sudden deathM
As she blew out her lightL
-
And there was one who turned from clamoring streetsN
And walked in lamplit gardens among black treesO
And looked at the windy skyC
And thought with terror how stones and roots would freezeO
And birds in the dead boughs cryC
-
And she hurried back as snow fell mixed with rainD
To mingle among the crowds againP
To jostle beneath blue lamps along the streetQ
And lost herself in the warm bright coiling dreamR
With a sound of murmuring voices and shuffling feetQ
-
And one from his high bright window looking downS
On luminous chasms that cleft the basalt townS
Hearing a sea like murmur riseT
Desired to leave his dream descend from the towerE
And drown in waves of shouts and laughter and criesT
