Senlin sat before us and we heard himA
He smoked his pipe before us and we saw himA
Was he small with reddish hairB
Did he light his pipe with a meditative stareB
And a twinkling flame reflected in blue eyesC
'I am alone' said Senlin 'in a forest of leavesD
The single leaf that creeps and fallsE
The single blade of grass in a desert of grassF
That none foresaw and none recallsE
The single shell that a green wave shattersG
In tiny specks of whiteness on brown sandsH
How shall you understand me with your heartsI
Who cannot reach me with your hands 'J
The city dissolves about us and its wallsE
Are the sands beside a seaK
We plunge in a chaos of dunes white waves before usL
Crash on kelp tumultuouslyM
Gulls wheel over foam the clouds blow tatteredN
The sun is swallowed Has Senlin become a shoreO
Is Senlin a grain of sand beneath our footstepsP
A speck of shell upon which waves will roarO
Senlin we cry Senlin again no answerQ
Only the crash of sea on a shell white shoreO
Yet we would say this is no shore at allM
But a small bright room with lamplight on the wallM
And the familiar chairB
Where Senlin sat with lamplight on his hairB
