Red is the color of blood and I will seek itA
I have sought it in the grassB
It is the color of steep sun seen through eyelidsC
-
It is hidden under the suave flesh of womenD
Flows there quietly flowsE
It mounts from the heart to the temples the singing mouthF
As cold sap climbs to the roseE
I am confused in webs and knots of scarletG
Spun from the darknessH
Or shuttled from the mouths of thirsty spidersI
-
Madness for red I devour the leaves of autumnJ
I tire of the green of the worldK
I am myself a mouth for bloodL
-
Here in the golden haze of the late slant sunD
Let us walk with the light in our eyesM
To a single bench from the outset predeterminedN
Look there are seagulls in these city skiesM
Kindled against the blueO
But I do not think of the seagulls I think of youO
-
Your eyes with the late sun in themP
Are like blue pools dazzled with yellow petalsQ
This pale green suits them wellR
-
Here is your finger with an emerald on itA
The one I gave you I say these things politelyS
But what I think beneath them who can tellR
-
For I think of you crumpled against a whitenessH
Flayed and torn with a dulled faceT
I think of you writing a thing of scarletG
And myself rising red from that embraceT
-
November sun is sunlight poured through honeyS
Old things in such a light grow subtle and fineU
Bare oaks are like still fireV
Talk to me now we drink the evening's wineU
Look how our shadows creep along the graveW
And this way how the gravel begins to shineU
-
This is the time of day for recollectionsX
For sentimental regrets oblique allusionsX
Rose leaves shrivelled in a musty jarY
Scatter them to the wind There are tempests comingZ
It is dark with a windy starY
-
If human mouths were really roses my dearA2
Why must we link things soB2
I would tear yours petal by petal with slow murderV
I would pluck the stamens the pistilsB2
The gold and the greenC2
Spreading the subtle sweetness that was your breathD2
On a cold wave of deathD2
-
Now let us walk back slowly as we cameE2
We will light the room with candles they may shineU
Like rows of yellow eyesB2
Your hair is like spun fire by candle flameE2
You smile at me say nothing You are wiseB2
-
For I think of you flung down brutal darknessB2
Crushed and red with pale faceB2
I think of you with your hair disordered and drippingZ
And myself rising red from that embraceB2
