Over the darkened city the city of towersA
The city of a thousand gatesB
Over the gleaming terraced roofs the huddled towersA
Over a somnolent whisper of loves and hatesB
The slow wind flows drearily streams and fallsC
With a mournful sound down rain dark wallsC
On one side purples the lustrous dusk of the seaD
And dreams in white at the city's feetE
On one side sleep the plains with heaped up hillsF
Oaks and beeches whisper in rings about itG
Above the trees are towers where dread bells beatE
-
The fisherman draws his streaming net from the seaD
And sails toward the far off city that seemsH
Like one vague towerI
The dark bow plunges to foam on blue black wavesJ
And shrill rain seethes like a ghostly music about himK
In a quiet showerI
-
Rain with a shrill sings on the lapsing wavesJ
Rain thrills over the roofs againL
Like a shadow of shifting silver it crosses the cityD
The lamps in the streets are streamed with rainM
And sparrows complain beneath deep eavesN
And among whirled leavesN
The sea gulls blowing from tower to lower towerI
From wall to remoter wallO
Skim with the driven rain to the rising sea soundP
And close grey wings and fallO
-
Hearing great rain above me I now rememberI
A girl who stood by the door and shut her eyesQ
Her pale cheeks glistened with rain she stood and shiveredR
Into a forest of silver she vanished slowlyD
Voices about me riseQ
-
Voices clear and silvery voices of raindropsS
'We struck with silver claws we struck her downT
We are the ghosts of the singing furies '-
A chorus of elfin voices blowing about meD
Weaves to a babel of sound Each cries a secretU
I run among them reach out vain hands and drownT
-
'I am the one who stood beside you and smiledV
Thinking your face so strangely young '-
'I am the one who loved you but did not dare '-
'I am the one you followed through crowded streetsW
The one who escaped you the one with red gleamed hair '-
-
'I am the one you saw to day who fellX
Senseless before you hearing a certain bellX
A bell that broke great memories in my brain '-
'I am the one who passed unnoticed before youY
Invisible in a cloud of secret pain '-
-
'I am the one who suddenly cried beholdingZ
The face of a certain man on the dazzling screenA2
They wrote me that he was dead It was long agoB2
I walked in the streets for a long while hearing nothingZ
And returned to see it again And it was so '-
-
Weave weave weave you streaks of rainM
I am dissolved and woven againL
Thousands of faces rise and vanish before meD
Thousands of voices weave in the rainM
-
'I am the one who rode beside you blinkingZ
At a dazzle of golden lightsC2
Tempests of music swept me I was thinkingZ
Of the gorgeous promise of certain nightsC2
Of the woman who suddenly smiled at me this dayD2
Smiled in a certain delicious sidelong wayD2
And turned as she reached the doorE2
To smile once moreE2
Her hands are whiter than snow on midnight waterI
Her throat is golden and full of golden laughterI
Her eyes are strange as the stealth of the moonF2
On a night in JuneF2
She runs among whistling leaves I hurry afterI
She dances in dreams over white waved waterI
Her body is white and fragrant and coolG2
Magnolia petals that float on a white starred poolG2
I have dreamed of her dreaming for many nightsC2
Of a broken music and golden lightsC2
Of broken webs of silver heavily fallingZ
Between my hands and their white desireI
And dark leaved boughs edged with a golden radianceH2
Dipping to screen a fireI
I dream that I walk with her beneath high treesI2
But as I lean to kiss her faceJ2
She is blown aloft on wind I catch at leavesN
And run in a moonless placeJ2
And I hear a crashing of terrible rocks flung downT
And shattering trees and cracking wallsC
And a net of intense white flame roars over the townT
And someone cries and darkness fallsC
But now she has leaned and smiled at meD
My veins are afire with musicK2
Her eyes have kissed me my body is turned to lightL2
I shall dream to her secret heart tonight '-
-
He rises and moves away he says no wordR
He folds his evening paper and turns awayD2
I rush through the dark with rows of lamplit facesM2
Fire bells peal and some of us turn to listenN2
And some sit motionless in their accustomed placesM2
-
Cold rain lashes the car roof scurries in gustsO2
Streams down the windows in waves and ripples of lustreI
The lamps in the streets are distorted and strangeP2
Someone takes his watch from his pocket and yawnsQ2
One peers out in the night for the place to changeP2
-
Rain rain rain we are buried in rainM
It will rain forever the swift wheels hiss through waterI
Pale sheets of water gleam in the windy streetE
The pealing of bells is lost in a drive of rain dropsS
Remote and hurried the great bells beatE
-
'I am the one whom life so shrewdly betrayedR2
Misfortune dogs me it always hunted me downT
And to day the woman I love lies deadS2
I gave her roses a ring with opalsS
These hands have touched her headS2
-
'I bound her to me in all soft waysS
I bound her to me in a net of daysS
Yet now she has gone in silence and said no wordR
How can we face these dazzling things I ask youY
There is no use we cry and are not heardR
-
'They cover a body with roses I shall not see itG
Must one return to the lifeless walls of a cityD
Whose soul is charred by fire '-
His eyes are closed his lips press tightly togetherI
Wheels hiss beneath us He yields us our desireI
-
'No do not stare so he is weak with griefT2
He cannot face you he turns his eyes asideU2
He is confused with painM
I suffered this I know It was long agoB2
He closes his eyes and drowns in death again '-
-
The wind hurls blows at the rain starred glistening windowsS
The wind shrills down from the half seen wallsS
We flow on the mournful wind in a dream of dyingZ
And at last a silence fallsS
