It is morning Senlin says and in the morningA
When the light drips through the shutters like the dewB
I arise I face the sunriseC
And do the things my fathers learned to doB
Stars in the purple dusk above the rooftopsD
Pale in a saffron mist and seem to dieE
And I myself on a swiftly tilting planetF
Stand before a glass and tie my tieE
Vine leaves tap my windowG
Dew drops sing to the garden stonesH
The robin chips in the chinaberry treeI
Repeating three clear tonesH
It is morning I stand by the mirrorJ
And tie my tie once moreK
While waves far off in a pale rose twilightL
Crash on a white sand shoreK
I stand by a mirror and comb my hairM
How small and white my faceN
The green earth tilts through a sphere of airM
And bathes in a flame of spaceN
There are houses hanging above the starsO
And stars hung under a seaI
And a sun far off in a shell of silenceP
Dapples my walls for meI
It is morning Senlin says and in the morningA
Should I not pause in the light to remember GodQ
Upright and firm I stand on a star unstableR
He is immense and lonely as a cloudS
I will dedicate this moment before my mirrorJ
To him alone and for him I will comb my hairM
Accept these humble offerings cloud of silenceP
I will think of you as I descend the stairM
Vine leaves tap my windowG
The snail track shines on the stonesH
Dew drops flash from the chinaberry treeI
Repeating two clear tonesH
It is morning I awake from a bed of silenceP
Shining I rise from the starless waters of sleepT
The walls are about me still as in the eveningA
I am the same and the same name still I keepT
The earth revolves with me yet makes no motionU
The stars pale silently in a coral skyE
In a whistling void I stand before my mirrorJ
Unconcerned I tie my tieE
There are horses neighing on far off hillsV
Tossing their long white manesW
And mountains flash in the rose white duskX
Their shoulders black with rainsW
It is morning I stand by the mirrorJ
And surprise my soul once moreK
The blue air rushes above my ceilingA
There are suns beneath my floorK
It is morning Senlin says I ascend from darknessY
And depart on the winds of space for I know not whereM
My watch is wound a key is in my pocketF
And the sky is darkened as I descend the stairM
There are shadows across the windows clouds in heavenU
And a god among the stars and I will goG
Thinking of him as I might think of daybreakZ
And humming a tune I knowG
Vine leaves tap at the windowG
Dew drops sing to the garden stonesH
The robin chirps in the chinaberry treeI
Repeating three clear tonesH
