L-apprenti Sorcier Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDAAAAAAEEFFGG GGGGHHGGGAAIIJJKKFFA ALLMMNOSuddenly there came to me | A |
The music of a mighty sea | A |
That on a bare and iron shore | B |
Thundered with a deeper roar | B |
Than all the tides that leap and run | C |
With us below the real sun | C |
Because the place was far away | D |
Above beyond our homely day | D |
Neighbouring close the frozen clime | A |
Where out of all the woods of time | A |
Amid the frightful seraphim | A |
The fierce cold eyes of Godhead gleam | A |
Revolving hate and misery | A |
And wars and famines yet to be | A |
And in my dreams I stood alone | E |
Upon a shelf of weedy stone | E |
And saw before my shrinking eyes | F |
The dark enormous breakers rise | F |
And hover and fall with deafening thunder | G |
Of thwarted foam that echoed under | G |
The ledge through many a cavern drear | G |
With hollow sounds of wintry fear | G |
And through the waters waste and grey | G |
Thick strown for many a league away | G |
Out of the toiling sea arose | H |
Many a face and form of those | H |
Thin elemental people dear | G |
Who live beyond our heavy sphere | G |
And all at once from far and near | G |
They all held out their arms to me | A |
Crying in their melody | A |
Leap in Leap in and take thy fill | I |
Of all the cosmic good and ill | I |
Be as the Living ones that know | J |
Enormous joy enormous woe | J |
Pain beyond thought and fiery bliss | K |
For all thy study hunted this | K |
On wings of magic to arise | F |
And wash from off thy filmed eyes | F |
The cloud of cold mortality | A |
To find the real life and be | A |
As are the children of the deep | L |
Be bold and dare the glorious leap | L |
Or to thy shame go slink again | M |
Back to the narrow ways of men | M |
So all these mocked me as I stood | N |
Striving to wake because I feared the flood | O |
