Irish Nocturne Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCEFFGHDHDIFFIJ KJKLMLMNN

Now the grey mist comes creeping upA
From the waste ocean s weedy strandB
And fills the valley as a cupA
If filled of evil drink in a wizard s handB
And the trees fade out of sightC
Like dreary ghosts unhealthilyD
Into the damp pale nightC
Till you almost think that a clearer eye could seeE
Some shape come up of a demon seeking apartF
His meat as Grendel sought in HarteF
The thanes that sat by the wintry logG
Grendel or the shadowy massH
Of Balor or the man with the face of clayD
The grey grey walker who used to passH
Over the rock arch nightly to his preyD
But here at the dumb slow stream where the willows hangI
With never a wind to blow the mists apartF
Bitter and bitter it is for thee O my heartF
Looking upon this land where poets sangI
Thus with the dreary shroudJ
Unwholesome over it spreadK
And knowing the fog and the cloudJ
In her people s heart and headK
Even as it lies for ever upon her coastsL
Making them dim and dreamy lest her sons should ever ariseM
And remember all their boastsL
For I know that the colourless skiesM
And the blurred horizons breedN
Lonely desire and many words and brooding and never a deedN
