Thank God that there are solid folk	A
Who water flowers and roll the lawn	B
And sit an sew and talk and smoke	A
And snore all through the summer dawn	B

Who pass untroubled nights and days	C
Full fed and sleepily content	D
Rejoicing in each other s praise	C
Respectable and innocent	E

Who feel the things that all men feel	F
And think in well worn grooves of thought	G
Whose honest spirits never reel	F
Before man s mystery overwrought	G

Yet not unfaithful nor unkind	H
with work day virtues surely staid	I
Theirs is the sane and humble mind	H
And dull affections undismayed	H

O happy people I have seen	J
No verse yet written in your praise	C
And truth to tell the time has been	K
I would have scorned your easy ways	C

But now thro weariness and strife	L
I learn your worthiness indeed	H
The world is better for such life	L
As stout suburban people lead	H

Too often have I sat alone	M
When the wet night falls heavily	N
And fretting winds around me moan	M
And homeless longing vexes me	N
	-
For lore that I shall never know	O
And visions none can hope to see	N
Till brooding works upon me so	O
A childish fear steals over me	N

I look around the empty room	P
The clock still ticking in its place	Q
And all else silent as the tomb	P
Till suddenly I think a face	Q

Grows from the darkness just beside	H
I turn and lo it fades away	R
And soon another phantom tide	H
Of shifting dreams begins to play	R

And dusky galleys past me sail	S
Full freighted on a faerie sea	N
I hear the silken merchants hail	S
Across the ringing waves to me	N

Then suddenly again the room	P
Familiar books about me piled	H
And I alone amid the gloom	P
By one more mocking dream beguiled	H

And still no neared to the Light	H
And still no further from myself	T
Alone and lost in clinging night	H
The clock s still ticking on the shelf	T

Then do I envy solid folk	A
Who sit of evenings by the fire	U
After their work and doze and smoke	A
And are not fretted by desire	U
