Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJIJ KLKL MNMN OPOP OFOF QRQR JSJSI heard the swallow sing in the eaves and rose | A |
All in a strange delight while others slept | B |
And down the creaking stair alone tip toes | A |
So carefully I crept | B |
- | |
The house was dark with silly blinds yet drawn | C |
But outside the clean air was filled with light | D |
And underneath my feet the cold wet lawn | C |
With dew was twinkling bright | D |
- | |
The cobwebs hung from every branch and spray | E |
Gleaming with pearly strands of laden thread | F |
And long and still the morning shadows lay | E |
Across the meadows spread | F |

At that pure hour when yet no sound of man | G |
Stirs in the whiteness of the wakening earth | H |
Alone through innocent solitudes I ran | G |
Singing aloud for mirth | H |
- | |
Till I had found the open mountain heath | I |
Yellow with gorse and rested there and stood | J |
To gaze upon the misty sea beneath | I |
Or on the neighbouring wood | J |
- | |
That little wood of hazel and tall pine | K |
And youngling fir where oft we have loved to see | L |
The level beams of early morning shine | K |
Freshly from tree to tree | L |
- | |
Through the denser wood there's many a pool | M |
Of deep and night born shadow lingers yet | N |
Where the new wakened flowers are damp and cool | M |
And the long grass is wet | N |
- | |
In the sweet heather long I rested there | O |
Looking upon the dappled early sky | P |
When suddenly from out the shining air | O |
A god came flashing by | P |
- | |
Swift naked eager pitilessly fair | O |
With a live crown of birds about his head | F |
Singing and fluttering and his fiery hair | O |
Far out behind him spread | F |
- | |
Streamed like a rippling torch upon the breeze | Q |
Of his own glorious swiftness in the grass | R |
He bruised no feathery stalk and through the trees | Q |
I saw his whiteness pass | R |
- | |
But when I followed him beyond the wood | J |
Lo He was changed into a solemn bull | S |
That there upon the open pasture stood | J |
And browsed his lazy full | S |
