As The Ruin Falls Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEDE FGFG HH

All this is flashy rhetoric about loving youA
I never had a selfless thought since I was bornB
I am mercenary and self seeking through and throughA
I want God you all friends merely to serve my turnC
-
Peace re assurance pleasure are the goals I seekD
I cannot crawl one inch outside my proper skinE
I talk of love a scholar's parrot may talk GreekD
But self imprisoned always end where I beginE
-
Only that now you have taught me but how late my lackF
I see the chasm And everything you are was makingG
My heart into a bridge by which I might get backF
From exile and grow man And now the bridge is breakingG
-
For this I bless you as the ruin falls The painsH
You give me are more precious than all other gainsH
