Thou hast taken the light of many sunsA
And they are sealed in the prison house of gloomB
Even as candle flamesC
Hast thou taken the souls of menD
With winds from out a hollow placeE
They are hid in the abyss as in a seaF
And the gulfs are over themG
As the weight of many mountainsA
As the depth of many seasH
Thy shields are between them and the lightI
They are past its burden and bitternessJ
The spears of the day shall not touch themG
The chains of the sun shall not hale them forthK
-
Many men there wereL
In the days that are now of thy realmM
That thou hast scaled with the seal of many deepsJ
Their feet were as eagles' wings in the quest of TruthN
Aye mightily they desired her faceJ
Hunting her through the lands of lifeO
As men in the blankness of the wasteP
That seek for a buried treasure house of kingsJ
But against them were the veilsJ
That hands may not rend nor sabers pierceJ
And Truth was withheld from themG
As a water that is seen afar at dawnQ
And at noon is lost in the sandR
Before the feet of the travellerL
The world was a barrennessJ
And the gardens were as the wasteP
And they turned them to the adventure of the darkS
To the travelling of the land without roadsJ
To the sailing of the sea that hath no beaconsJ
Why have they not returnedT
Their quest hath found end in theeF
Or surely they had faredU
Once more to the place whence they cameV
As men that have journeyed to a fruitless landR
They have looked on thy faceJ
And to them it is the countenance of TruthN
Thy silence is sweeter to them than the voice of loveW
Thine embrace more dear than the clasp of the belovedX
They are fed with the emptiness past the veilY
And their hunger is filledZ
They have found the waters of peaceJ
And are athirst no moreA2
They know a rest that is deeper than the gulfsJ
And whose seal is unbreakable as the seal of the voidB2
They sleep the sleep of the sunsJ
And the vast is a garment unto themG
