The Nereid Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBA CDDC EFFE GHHG IJJI KLLK MNNM AJJA

Her face the sinking stars desireA
Unto her place the slow deeps bringB
Shadow of errant winds that wingB
O'er sterile gulfs of foam and fireA
-
Her beauty is the light of pearlsC
AII stars and dreams and sunsets dieD
To make the fluctuant glooms that lieD
Around her and low noonlight swirlsC
-
Down ocean's firmamental deepE
To weave for who glimmers thereF
Elusive visions vague and fairF
And night is as a dreamless sleepE
-
She has not known the night's unrestG
Nor the white curse of clearer dayH
The tremors of the tempest playH
Like slow delight about her breastG
-
The berylline pallors of her faceI
Illume the kingdom of the drownedJ
In her the love that none has foundJ
The unflowering rapture folded graceI
-
Await some lover strayed and loneK
Some god misled who shall not comeL
Though the decrescent seas lie dumbL
And sunken in their wells of stoneK
-
But nevermore of him perchanceM
Her enigmatic musings areN
Whose purpling tresses float afarN
In grottoes of the last romanceM
-
Serene an immanence of fireA
She dwells for ever ocean thralledJ
Soul of the sea's vast emeraldJ
Her face the sinking stars desireA
