A crownless king who reigns aloneA
I live within this ashen landB
Where winds rebuild from wandering sandB
My columns and my crumbled throneA
-
My sway is on the men that wereC
And wan sweet women dear and deadD
Beside a marble queen my bedD
Is made within this sepulcherC
-
In gardens desolate to the sunE
Faring alone I sigh to findF
The dusty closes dim and blindF
Where winter and the spring are oneE
-
My shadowy visage grey with griefG
In sunken waters walled with sandB
I see where all mine ancient landB
Lies yellow like an autumn leafG
-
My silver lutes of subtle stringH
Are rust but on the grievous breezeI
I hear what sobbing memoriesI
And muted sorrows murmuringH
-
Across the broken monumentsJ
Memorial of the dreams of oldK
The sunset flings a ghostly goldK
To mock mine ancient affluenceL
-
About the tombs of stone and brassM
The silver lights of evening fleeN
And slowly now and solemnlyN
I see the pomp of shadows passM
-
Often beneath some fervid moonO
With splendid spells I vainly striveP
Dead loves imperial to reviveP
And speak a heart remembered runeO
-
But ah the lovely phantoms failQ
The faces fade to mist and lightR
The vermeil lips of my delightR
Are dim the eyes are ashen paleQ
-
A crownless king who reigns aloneA
I live within this ashen landB
Where winds rebuild from wandering sandB
My columns and my crumbled throneA
