Rhyme Scheme: ABCCB ADEED FGEEG FHIIH JKLLK JMNNMThe ghostly Ere that walks the fen | A |
Tonight thine only light shall be | B |
On lethal ways thy soul shall pass | C |
And prove the stealthy coiled morass | C |
With mocking mists for company | B |
- | |
On roads thou goest not again | A |
To shores where thou hast never gone | D |
Fare onward though the shuddering queach | E |
And serpent rippled waters reach | E |
Like seepage pools of Acheron | D |
- | |
Beside thee and the twisted reeds | F |
Close raddled as a witch's net | G |
Enwind thy knees and cling and clutch | E |
Like wreathing adders though the touch | E |
Of the blind air be dank and wet | G |
- | |
As from a wounded Thing that bleeds | F |
In cloud and darkness overhead | H |
Fare onward where thy dreams of yore | I |
In splendor drape the fetid shore | I |
And pestilential waters dead | H |
- | |
And though the toads' irrision rise | J |
Like grinding of Satanic racks | K |
And spectral willows gaunt and grey | L |
Gibber along thy shrouded way | L |
Where vipers lie with livid backs | K |
- | |
And watch thee with their sulphurous eyes | J |
Fare onward till thy feet shall slip | M |
Deep in the sudden pool ordained | N |
And all the noisome draught be drained | N |
That turns to Lethe on the lip | M |
