Lost from those archangelic thrones that starA
Fadeless and fixed heaven's light of azure blissB
Forbanned of all His splendor and depressedC
Beyond the birth of the first sun and lowerD
Than the last star's decline I still endureE
Abased majestic fallen beautifulF
And unregretful in the doubted darkG
Throneless that greatens chaos ward albeitH
From chanting stars that throng the nave of nightI
Lost echoes wander here and of His praiseJ
With ringing moons for cymbals dinned afarA
And shouted from the flaming mouths of sunsK
-
The shadows of impalpable blank deepsK
Deep upon deep accumulate close downL
Around my head concentered while aboveM
In the lit loftier blue star after starA
Spins endless orbits betwixt me and heavenN
And at my feet mysterious Chaos breaksK
Abrupt immeasurable Round His throneO
Throbs now the rhythmic resonance of sunsK
Incessant perfect music infiniteP
I throneless hear the discords of the darkG
And roar of ruin uncreate than whichQ
Some vast cacophony of dragons heardR
In wasted worlds were purer melodyS
-
The universe His tyranny constrainsK
Turns on in old and consummated gulfsK
The stars that wield His judgement wait at handT
And in new deeps Apocalyptic sunsK
Prepare His corning lo His mighty whimU
To rear and mar goes forth enormouslyS
In nights and constellations Darkness hearsK
Enrag d suns that bellow down the deepV
God's ravenous and insatiable willW
And He is strong with change and rideth forthX
In whirlwind clothed with thunders and with doomY
To the red stars God's throne is reared of changeZ
Its myriad and successive hands supportA2
Like music His omnipotence that failsK
If mercy or if justice interruptB2
The sequence of that tyranny begunN
Upon injustice and doomed evermoreC2
To stand therebyD2
-
I who with will not lessK
Than His but lesser strength opposed to HimU
This unsubmissive brow and lifted mindE2
He holds remote in nullity and nightI
Doubtful between old Chaos and the deepsK
Betrayed by Time to vassalage MethinksK
All tyrants fear whom they may not destroyF2
And I that am of essence one with HisK
Though less in measure He may not destroyF2
And but withstands in gulfs of dark suspenseK
A secret dread for ever for God knowsK
This quiet will irrevocably setG2
Against His own and this my prime revoltH2
Yet stubborn and confirmed eternallyS
And with the hatred born of fear and fedI2
Ever thereby God hates me and His gazeK
Sees the bright menace of mine eyes afarA
Through midnight and the innumerable blazeK
Of servile suns lo strong in tyrannyS
The despot trembles that I stand opposedJ2
For fain am I to hush the anguished criesK
Of Substance broken on the racks of changeZ
Of Matter tortured into life and GodK2
Knowing this dreads evermore some huge mishapL2
That in the vigils of OmnipotenceK
Once careless I shall enter heaven or HeS
Himself with weight of some unwonted actM2
Thoughtless perturb His balanced tyrannyS
To mine advance of watchful aspirationN
-
With rumored thunder and enormous groanO
Burden of sound that heavens overborneO
Let slip from deep to deep even to thisK
Where climb the huge cacophonies of ChaosK
God's universe moves on Confirmed in prideN2
In patient majesty serene and strongO2
I wait the dreamt inevitable hourD
Fulfilled of orbits ultimate when GodK2
Whether through His mischance or mine own deedP2
Or rise of other and extremer StrengthQ2
Shall vanish and the lightened universeK
No more remember Him than Silence doesK
An ancient thunder I know not if theseK
Mine all indomitable eyes shall seeS
A maimed and dwindled Godhead cast amongR2
The stars of His creating and beneathS2
The unnumbered rush of swift and shining feetT2
Trodden into night or mark the fiery breathU2
Of His infuriate suns blaze forth uponO
And scorch that coarsened Essence or His flameV2
A mightier comet roar and redden downO
Portentous unto Chaos I but waitW2
In strong majestic patience equableF
That hour of consummation and of doomY
Of justice and rebellion justifiedN2
