O many gulfed unalterable oneA
Whose deep sustainsB
Far drifting world and sunA
Thou wast ere ever star put out on theeC
And thou shalt beC
When never world remainsB
When all the suns' triumphant strength and prideD
Is sunk in voidness absoluteE
And their majestic music wideD
In vaster silence rendered muteE
And though God's will were night to dusk the blueF
And law to cancel and disperseG
The tangled tissues of the universeG
His might were impotent to conquer theeC
O indivisible infinityC
Thy darks subdueF
All light that treads thee down a spaceH
Exulting over thine archetypal deepsH
The cycles die and lo thy darkness reapsH
The flame of mightiest starsH
In aeon implicating warsH
Thou tearest planets from their placeH
Worlds granite spinedF
To thine erodents yieldF
Their treasures centrally confinedF
In crypts by continental pillars sealedF
What suns and worlds have been thy preyI
Through unhorizoned reaches of the pastF
What spheres that now essayI
Time's undimensioned vastF
Shall plunge forgotten to thy gloom at lengthJ
With life that cried its query of the NightF
To ears with silence filledF
What worlds unborn shall dare thy strengthJ
Girt by a sun's unwearied mightF
And dip to darkness when the sun is stilledF
-
O incontestable AbyssH
What light in thine embrace of darkness sleepsH
What blaze of a sidereal multitudeF
No peopled world is left to missH
What motion is at rest within thy deepsH
What gyres of planets long become thy foodF
Worlds unconstrainableF
That plunged therein to peaceH
Like tempest worn and crew forsaken shipsH
And suns that fellF
To huge and ultimate eclipseH
And from the eternal stances found releaseH
What sound thy gulfs of silence holdF
Stupendous thunder of the meeting starsH
And crash of orbits that divergedF
With Life's thin song are mergedF
Thy quietudes enfoldF
Paean and threnody as oneA
And battle blare of unremembered warsH
With festal songsH
Sung in the Romes of ruined spheresH
And music that belongsH
To undiscoverable younger yearsH
With words of yesterdayI
Ah who may stayI
Thy soundless world devouring tideF
O thou whose hands pluck out the light of starsH
Are worlds but as a destined fruit for theeC
May no sufficient barsH
Nor marks inveterate abideF
As shores to baffle thine unbillowing seaC
Still and unstriving nowK
What plottest thouK
Within thy universe ulterior deepsC
Dark as the final lull of sunsC
What new advancement of the nightF
On citadels of stars around whose mightF
Thy slow encroachment runsC
And crouching silence thunder potent sleepsC
