Ode To Matter Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCACABBDEDEEDFGHIFI JKI LMAMLN ANOOPQRASRAS TUJTUKVWAAVWXXVO tissued fabric of the frame of things | A |
Thou art an alternating tide | B |
And Life a moment's foam | C |
Thy shifting wave upflings | A |
Billowed with suns and worlds that roam | C |
Where winds of Force direct with driving wings | A |
Thy depths immingle and divide | B |
A sea whereto the gulfs as shores abide | B |
In peaceless rounds of change | D |
Thy forms irrevocably flee | E |
Inevitable laws estrange | D |
All shapes of stars and worlds that be | E |
And like a mist's inconstant fantasy | E |
Ensphered anew as alien forms they range | D |
Lo here a sun is smitten into night | F |
One with the cosmic mire | G |
And yonder startles into fire | H |
The dust of stars destroyed | I |
Whose quickened worlds resume their ancient flight | F |
Till arms of darkness rising from the void | I |
Drag down the pillared suns again | J |
And other systems rise and wane | K |
Rebuilt from star and asteroid | I |
- | |
Lo is there end | L |
Or rest unto thy toil | M |
Thou who createst many forms | A |
Yet none that stay of all thy fruitful soil | M |
Shall all the terms of living suns extend | L |
And find thy labour incomplete | N |
- | |
All storms | A |
Where stars irreparably meet | N |
Prepare not thy potential field | O |
Unto some larger yield | O |
Than aught the systems show some fruit more great | P |
Some flower ultimate | Q |
Thine atoms pour | R |
Through moulds of many worlds and suns | A |
As they have passed | S |
In years beyond all memory and lore | R |
As they shall flee while Time his orbit runs | A |
Along abysmal aeons cast | S |
- | |
What strivest thou to build | T |
With dust of systems reared and rent | U |
And flame of suns blown out and lit again | J |
Dost toil with hands as yet unskilled | T |
To some obscurely known intent | U |
Far sought through mists of weariness and pain | K |
Ah dare we dream | V |
That thou shalt dream no fairer thing than man | W |
No higher world than this | A |
That from thine unexplorable abyss | A |
No stronger Life shall rise supreme | V |
Wrought from rejected dust whereof began | W |
All former Life | X |
The dust remoulded through abyssal strife | X |
Within the suns' uncompassable scheme | V |
