That the clouds were marvelous white elephants | B |
Journeying in droves to a far off sacred city | C |
That always made the sunset with the reflection of its altar fires | D |

But now I am grown old and wise | E |
And disillusioned | F |
And I know that the clouds are toy animals for children | G |
And are made of cotton batting | H |
Or at best are woven from a sort of mercerized wool | I |
And are always cut out | J |
With patterns of tissue paper | K |
