A Song From Hell Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJ CKCK LMLM NONO PQPQ RSRS TUUT VWWV XYYX MCCZ DDDD| This song I got me from the nether pits | A |
| Where as a witches' cauldron brew that blends | B |
| Envenomed roots and herbs malingly foul | C |
| With poison essence drawn from charnel things | D |
| And carrion found by night the various damned | E |
| Bubble and seethe with their own agony | F |
| And cry yo upward firmamental gulfs | G |
| Reddened with blotching flame as though with stars | H |
| A chant that rears like some distillment weird | I |
| Atwist with urge of pain from writhing lips | J |
| - | |
| We are the damned the strain and moil | C |
| That Death has washed from earthly time | K |
| Drawn down by tides of Hell we boil | C |
| Like toads within a torrid slime | K |
| - | |
| Our sins were great a deadly charge | L |
| And yet less heavythan our fate | M |
| We pour through Hell's alembic large | L |
| Each soul transformed to vital hate | M |
| - | |
| The good that in our hearts remained | N |
| By sin untainted now is one | O |
| With vileness cankeringly ingrained | N |
| By earth and Hell we stand undone | O |
| - | |
| For that which earth unfinished left | P |
| The consummation of the pit | Q |
| From out the insuperable cleft | P |
| To where its lords presiding sit | Q |
| - | |
| And watch with contestless sight | R |
| We burn by double test refined | S |
| To clearest evil purg d quite | R |
| Of good or mercy from the mind | S |
| - | |
| Our souls are linked to vast despair | T |
| As to some nadir founded rock | U |
| Where never hope descends to mock | U |
| Beyond the dip of terrene air | T |
| - | |
| We heighten to a hate that beats | V |
| In rage all impotently strong | W |
| Against the worlds that league with wrong | W |
| Whose pain each other's pain completes | V |
| - | |
| Ah would our hate were hands to draw | X |
| The lords of earth and hell beneath | Y |
| Ah would our hate were venomed teeth | Y |
| To rend them through their mail of law | X |
| - | |
| Ah would that we might cleave with hate | M |
| The roof and base and walls of Hell | C |
| Wrench at its pillars till they fell | C |
| With ruin indiscriminate | Z |
| - | |
| Immovably it stands with springs | D |
| Of fire to tear its inward glooms | D |
| Wherefrom ascending high our fumes | D |
| Are breath of incense to its kings | D |
