See old white capped Pussy sit | A |
Fairly gray with worry and care | B |
In her little straight backed rocking chair | B |
Knit knit knit | A |
Till she is tired of it | A |
- | |
Why does she work so Look and see | C |
There in the corner children three | C |
Plump and furry and full of fun | D |
A good for nothing is every one | D |
And all those kittens | E |
Must have mittens | E |
- | |
Weather is cold and snow and sleet | F |
Make it bad for their little feet | F |
And they dare not peep outside because | G |
Jack Frost stands ready to pinch their paws | G |
That's why she sits | H |
And knits and knits | H |
- | |
If by any chance she drops her ball | I |
And if one of them chases it at all | I |
She peeps out over her glasses' rim | J |
With a savage dreadful scowl at him | J |
And cries out Scat | K |
You saucy cat | K |
- | |
Or if her long tail gets uncurled | K |
And sways but the least bit in the world | K |
And one of them makes a roguish nip | L |
At it or plays at mouse with the tip | L |
Somebody hears | M |
A loud boxed ears | N |
- | |
With them 'tis hurry scurry and play | O |
Or sleep in a round coil half the day | O |
While creakety creak the rockers go | P |
And the mittens grow and grow and grow | P |
So shapely and fast | K |
They are done at last | K |
- | |
She summons the kittens each one stands | Q |
While the mittens are tried on his clumsy hands | Q |
Then her glasses drop to the end of her nose | R |
And her wits go wandering off in a doze | R |
And as never before | S |
Does old Puss snore | S |
- | |
She is off to that dream land paradise | T |
Of cats where cupboards are full of mice | T |
Where white and sweet and big as the sea | C |
Are the saucers of warm new milk ah me | C |
There is no cream | U |
Like that in a dream | U |
- | |
There the ways of things are very absurd | K |
For a bobolink or a yellow bird | K |
Comes of its own accord and sits | H |
On every knitting needle that knits | H |
And pipes and sings | V |
As the rocker swings | V |
- | |
Suddenly there is a noise of feet | K |
Rattle and clatter and patter and beat | K |
Old Puss makes a flying leap from her chair | B |
With a half awake and startled stare | B |
Striving to see | C |
What it may be | C |
- | |
Helter skelter the kittens appear | W |
Oh mother dear we very much fear | W |
That we have lost our mittens they cry | X |
You have Then you shall have no pie | X |
Lost your mittens | E |
You naughty kittens | E |
- | |
Old mother Puss is dreadfully cross | Y |
At the spoiled dream first then at the loss | Y |
And with floods of tears down either cheek | Z |
Each frightened kitten tries to speak | Z |
Miew miew miew | U |
Miew miew miew | U |
- | |
A smart cuff over their little brains | A2 |
Is the only answer the mother deigns | A2 |
Not another word from one of you | B2 |
It means so without more ado | B2 |
Ashamed and slow | P |
Away they go | P |
- | |
Again she settles herself and sleeps | C2 |
This time she dreams that she crouches and creeps | C2 |
A great gray tiger along the grass | D2 |
While herds of soft eyed antelopes pass | D2 |
When patter patter | E2 |
Now what's the matter | E2 |
- | |
Again with a scramble the three appear | W |
Oh mammy dear see here see here | F2 |
We have found our mittens see they cry | X |
You have Then you shall have some pie | X |
Found your mittens | E |
You nice nice kittens | E |
- | |
She goes to the oven there is a pie | X |
She sets it out on the floor close by | X |
'Tis smoking hot and covered with juice | G2 |
And she says to them Eat as much as you choose | H2 |
So up to the chin | I2 |
They all dip in | I2 |
- | |
Dame Puss goes out to wash her paws | G |
And to comb her whiskers with her claws | G |
When again the troublesome three appear | W |
Oh mother dear see here see here | F2 |
Distressed and shy | X |
They begin to cry | X |
- | |
No wonder they cry they did not wait | K |
For a spoon or knife or fork or plate | K |
But ate with their fingers ah how soiled | K |
Dame Puss declares the mittens are spoiled | K |
Miew miew miew | U |
Miew miew miew | U |
- | |
Then all run out to the rain water tub | J2 |
Dip in their mittens and rub and rub | J2 |
Their little knuckles are fairly bare | B |
And wet as if drowned is every hair | B |
Still over the tub | J2 |
They rub rub rub | J2 |
- | |
Once more they haste to their mother dear | W |
Oh mammy dear see here see here | F2 |
We've washed our mittens clean they cry | X |
You darling kittens | E |
To wash your mittens | E |
She says and fondles them till they're dry | X |
Purr purr purr | E2 |
Purr pu r r p u r r | K2 |
