Knit knit knit knitA
See old white capped Pussy sitA
Fairly gray with worry and careB
In her little straight backed rocking chairB
Knit knit knitA
Till she is tired of itA
-
Why does she work so Look and seeC
There in the corner children threeC
Plump and furry and full of funD
A good for nothing is every oneD
And all those kittensE
Must have mittensE
-
Weather is cold and snow and sleetF
Make it bad for their little feetF
And they dare not peep outside becauseG
Jack Frost stands ready to pinch their pawsG
That's why she sitsH
And knits and knitsH
-
If by any chance she drops her ballI
And if one of them chases it at allI
She peeps out over her glasses' rimJ
With a savage dreadful scowl at himJ
And cries out ScatK
You saucy catK
-
Or if her long tail gets uncurledK
And sways but the least bit in the worldK
And one of them makes a roguish nipL
At it or plays at mouse with the tipL
Somebody hearsM
A loud boxed earsN
-
With them 'tis hurry scurry and playO
Or sleep in a round coil half the dayO
While creakety creak the rockers goP
And the mittens grow and grow and growP
So shapely and fastK
They are done at lastK
-
She summons the kittens each one standsQ
While the mittens are tried on his clumsy handsQ
Then her glasses drop to the end of her noseR
And her wits go wandering off in a dozeR
And as never beforeS
Does old Puss snoreS
-
She is off to that dream land paradiseT
Of cats where cupboards are full of miceT
Where white and sweet and big as the seaC
Are the saucers of warm new milk ah meC
There is no creamU
Like that in a dreamU
-
There the ways of things are very absurdK
For a bobolink or a yellow birdK
Comes of its own accord and sitsH
On every knitting needle that knitsH
And pipes and singsV
As the rocker swingsV
-
Suddenly there is a noise of feetK
Rattle and clatter and patter and beatK
Old Puss makes a flying leap from her chairB
With a half awake and startled stareB
Striving to seeC
What it may beC
-
Helter skelter the kittens appearW
Oh mother dear we very much fearW
That we have lost our mittens they cryX
You have Then you shall have no pieX
Lost your mittensE
You naughty kittensE
-
Old mother Puss is dreadfully crossY
At the spoiled dream first then at the lossY
And with floods of tears down either cheekZ
Each frightened kitten tries to speakZ
Miew miew miewU
Miew miew miewU
-
A smart cuff over their little brainsA2
Is the only answer the mother deignsA2
Not another word from one of youB2
It means so without more adoB2
Ashamed and slowP
Away they goP
-
Again she settles herself and sleepsC2
This time she dreams that she crouches and creepsC2
A great gray tiger along the grassD2
While herds of soft eyed antelopes passD2
When patter patterE2
Now what's the matterE2
-
Again with a scramble the three appearW
Oh mammy dear see here see hereF2
We have found our mittens see they cryX
You have Then you shall have some pieX
Found your mittensE
You nice nice kittensE
-
She goes to the oven there is a pieX
She sets it out on the floor close byX
'Tis smoking hot and covered with juiceG2
And she says to them Eat as much as you chooseH2
So up to the chinI2
They all dip inI2
-
Dame Puss goes out to wash her pawsG
And to comb her whiskers with her clawsG
When again the troublesome three appearW
Oh mother dear see here see hereF2
Distressed and shyX
They begin to cryX
-
No wonder they cry they did not waitK
For a spoon or knife or fork or plateK
But ate with their fingers ah how soiledK
Dame Puss declares the mittens are spoiledK
Miew miew miewU
Miew miew miewU
-
Then all run out to the rain water tubJ2
Dip in their mittens and rub and rubJ2
Their little knuckles are fairly bareB
And wet as if drowned is every hairB
Still over the tubJ2
They rub rub rubJ2
-
Once more they haste to their mother dearW
Oh mammy dear see here see hereF2
We've washed our mittens clean they cryX
You darling kittensE
To wash your mittensE
She says and fondles them till they're dryX
Purr purr purrE2
Purr pu r r p u r rK2
