Only A Matter Of Time Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDAEFGHDIJ KLMNOPI CQRSTUDOWN SLIPPING Time sweet swift and shallow stream | A |
Here like a boulder lies this afternoon | B |
Across your eager flow So you shall stay | C |
Deepened and dammed to let me breathe and be | D |
Your troubled fluency your running gleam | A |
Shall pause and circle idly still and clear | E |
The while I lie and search your glassy pool | F |
Where gently coiling in their lazy round | G |
Unseparable minutes drift and swim | H |
Eddy and rise and brim And I will see | D |
How many crystal bubbles of slack Time | I |
The mind can hold and cherish in one Now | J |
- | |
Now for one concious vacancy of sense | K |
The stream is gathered in a depening pond | L |
Not a mere moving mirror Through the sharp | M |
Correct reflection of the standing scene | N |
The mind can dip and cleanse itself with rest | O |
And see slow spinning in the lucid gold | P |
Your liquid notes imperishable Time | I |
- | |
It cannot be The runnel slips away | C |
The clear smooth downward sluice begins again | Q |
More brightly slanting for that trembling pause | R |
Leaving the sense its conscious vague unease | S |
As when a sonnet flashes on the mind | T |
Trembles and burns an instant and is gone | U |
