The Yellow Gas Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AAAA BCBC ADAD CACA EFEF GCGC ACAC ECEC AHAH

The yellow gas is fired from street to streetA
past rows of heartless homes and hearths unlitA
dead churches and the unending pavement beatA
by crowds say rather haggard shades that flitA
-
round nightly haunts of their delusive dreamB
where'er our paradisal instinct starvesC
till on the utmost post its sinuous gleamB
crawls in the oily water of the wharvesC
-
where Homer's sea loses his keen breath hemm'dA
what place rebellious piles were driven downD
the priestlike waters to this task condemn'dA
to wash the roots of the inhuman townD
-
where fat and strange eyed fish that never sawC
the outer deep broad halls of sapphire lightA
glut in the city's draught each nameless mawC
and there wide eyed unto the soulless nightA
-
methinks a drown'd maid's face might fitly showE
what we have slain a life that had been freeF
clean large nor thus tormented even soE
as are the skies the salt winds and the seaF
-
Ay we had saved our days and kept them wholeG
to whom no part in our old joy remainsC
had felt those bright winds sweeping thro' our soulG
and all the keen sea tumbling in our veinsC
-
had thrill'd to harps of sunrise when the heightA
whitens and dawn dissolves in virgin tearsC
or caught across the hush'd ambrosial nightA
the choral music of the swinging spheresC
-
or drunk the silence if nought else But noE
and from each rotting soul distill in dreamsC
a poison o'er the old earth creeping slowE
that kills the flowers and curdles the live streamsC
-
that taints the fresh breath of re risen dayA
and reeks across the pale bewildered moonH
shall we be cleans'd and how I only prayA
red flame or deluge may that end be soonH
