Sweet days of breaking lightA
or yet the shadowy mightA
and blaze of starry strifeB
possess d my lifeB
-
sweet dawn of Beauty s dayC
first hint and smiling playC
of the compulsive forceD
that since my courseD
-
across the years obeysE
not tho all earlier daysE
in me were buried notF
were ye forgotF
-
The northern kingdom s dreamG
prison d in crystal gleamG
heard the pale flutes of springH
her thin bells ringH
-
the tranced maiden s eyesI
open d a far surmiseI
and heavens and meadows grewJ
a tender blueJ
-
of petal hearts that keepK
thro their dark winter sleepK
true memory of delightA
a hidden lightA
-
Then by her well RomanceL
waiting the fabled chanceL
dream d all the forest sceneM
in shifting greenM
-
and Melusina s gazeE
lurk d in the shadow d glazeE
of waters gliding stillN
a witching illN
-
or lost Undine weptO
where the hid streamlet creptO
to the dusk murmuring lowP
her silvery woeP
-
Dim breaths in the dim shadeQ
of the romantic gladeQ
told of the timid painR
that hearken d fainR
-
how Beauty came to saveS
the prison d life and waveS
above the famish d landsT
her healing handsT
-
Beauty in hidden waysE
walking a leafy mazeE
with magic odour dimU
far on life s rimU
-
Beauty sweet pain to kissV
Beauty sharp pain to missV
in sorrow or in joyW
a dear annoyW
-
Beauty with waiting yearsX
that bind the fount of tearsY
well won if once her lightA
shine before nightA
-
Then the shy heart of youthZ
dared know its weening soothZ
then first thy godhead SunA2
it s life s light oneA2
-
what time the hour outroll dB2
its banner blazon d goldC2
and all the honey d timeD2
rang rich with rhymeD2
-
rhyme and the liquid laughE2
of girlish spring to quaffE2
granted each heart and shedF2
about each headF2
-
a sound of harping blownG2
and airs of elfin toneG2
and gipsy waifs of songH2
a dancing throngH2
-
The yellow meads of MayC
acclaim d the louder layC
more rapturously athirstF2
for that fierce burstF2
-
of Summer s clarioningH2
what time his fulgent wingH2
should cleave the crystal spellI2
his hot eyes tellI2
-
each charm beneath the veilJ2
his eager hands assailJ2
and his red lips be prestF2
against her breastF2
-
filling her every veinR
with the diviner painR
of life beyond all dreamG
burning supremeG
-
O natural ecstasyB2
O highest grace to beB2
in every pulse to knowP
the Sungod s glowP
-
Thence the exulting strainR
sped onward as a rainR
of gold linked notesK2
from unseen throatsK2
-
till the mad heart adustF2
of August s aching lustF2
to do her beauty wrongH2
broke and the songH2
-
and in her poppied fateF2
ken life grown all too greatF2
illumed with grateful breathZ
the lips of deathZ
-
But those deep fibres holdF2
the season s mortal goldF2
by silent alchemyB2
of soul set freeB2
-
and woven in vision d showerL2
as each most secret hourL2
sheds the continuing blissV
in song or kissV
-
O poets I have lovedF2
when in my soul first movedF2
desire to breathe in oneA2
love song and sunA2
-
your pages that I turnM2
your jewelled phrases burnM2
richly behind a hazeE
of golden daysE
-
And O ye golden daysE
tho since on stranger waysE
to some undying warN2
the fatal starO2
-
of unseen Beauty drawP2
this soul to occult lawP2
obedient ever notF2
are ye forgotF2
