The hollow crystal of my winter dreamA
and silences where thought for worship whiteB
shimmer'd within the icy mirror gleamA
vanishes down the flood of broader lightB
The royal weft of arduous deviceC
and starr'd with strangest gems my shadowy prideD
and ritual of illusive artificeE
is shed away leaving the naked sideD
No more is set within the secret shrineF
a wonder wherein day nor night has partG
my passing makes the ways of earth divineF
with the wild splendours of a mortal heartG
A whisper thrills the living fringe of greenH
on my retreat tiptoe the silence standsI
the breathless morn waits till her step be seenH
my summer bride new life from nuptial landsI
The hidden places of her beauty holdJ
the savours shed o'er wastes of island airK
and her crown'd body's wealth of torrid goldJ
burns dusky in her summer storm of hairK
Her breasts in baffling curves an upward hopeL
strain towards the lips pain'd with too eager lifeM
and the rich noons faint on each lustrous slopeL
where thunder hush in the ardent brake is rifeM
I cannot tell what god is in her gazeN
such depths of slumbrous passion drown my breathO
but where the charmed shadow clings and staysN
Fate cowers before that high disdain of deathO
Oh take me to thy bosom's sultry beatP
steep all my sense in thy long breath of flameQ
oppress me with thy summer's heavy heatP
consume all me that wears an uncrown'd nameQ
burn this my flesh to a clear web of lightB
send thy keen airy spirit to search each veinR
that the hard pulse may throb with strong delightB
o'ermastering life and life's divinest painR
Then then we twain will seek each farthest wayS
mingled in radiance over cloud and leaT
our joy shall swell the exultant heart of dayS
our love shall tinge the rose of sky and seaT
And we shall know the steep pride of the hillsU
and the dark meditation of the woodV
or quench our rage where the red wine god spillsU
o'er glowing rocks the madness of his bloodW
Our link'd approach shall flush the water maidX
that dreams her limpid realm with wistful eyesY
our noon tide rest shall haunt her memory's shadeX
vexing her dim breast with unwonted sighsY
And where our fiercer joys have thrill'd the earthZ
shall burst hard stalks and cruel cups that keepA2
strong soul of seasons dead to fill the dearthZ
of lesser lives whose dream is dull with sleepA2
And gloriously our summer's reign shall endB2
in some dark pass that leads into the westC2
burnt incense wise each blood shall sweetly blendB2
exhaled in music from the love slain breastC2
some eve whose dragon dying hides the skyD2
and holds the hour on its empurpled wingsE2
while pallid seers proclaim the doom day nighD2
and shuddering nations watch the death of kingsE2
See now the time O eve of smoky brownF2
the morbid season of my close contentG2
drown'd flame broad swathes of vapour closing downF2
round the clear gaze that pierces vainly pentG2
and knows how vain the hero death that flungH2
far flame against the craven face of darkI2
poor hero heart the minstrel summer sungH2
O brooding hidden over a bitter carkH2
how vain did not the hot strength of the earthZ
exude in drifts of colour dwindlingH2
to dimmer odour wafts a hearted worthZ
the long defeated tribes to altar bringH2
The unslaked caravans of vast desireJ2
seeking in furnace sands some fierier roseK2
with deadly heart the red crusades of ireL2
following some dusky king of mighty woesK2
unto a nameless fall in distant fightB
such only freedom from the daily meshM2
spun by the crafty lord of wrong and rightB
the pride and splendour of rebellious fleshM2
full sated with wild honey of summer's heartG
the golden lot of ignominy that castN2
and craved the honour of a menial partG
to follow on bleeding feet nor fell the lastN2
how high their pyre blazed with insensate willO2
that the last word of their red tale be toldJ
and o'er their darkening blood a moment stillO2
hung on horizon wings the spirit's goldJ
the ghost of flame in the vast crucibleP2
transmuted of some viewless TrismegistJ
haply the same whose touch inaudibleP2
dissolves the lingering leaf to evening mistJ
Now with the lucid flower cups in their handsI
that star the pale fields of Thulean springH2
and silver from the moon made table landsI
of snow the glimmering distance vanishingH2
with opals that engeal the Boreal gleamA
and diamond drip of ether's crystal thrillO2
miraculous the cort ges of dreamA
over the hills of legend gathering fillO2
the imaginary avenues of gloomQ2
up to the watching windows that betrayS
the House of Contemplation vaulted roomQ2
soaring with shade that broods above pale dayS
pale day that wastes even since morning drain'dJ
by ambush'd mystery of its wanton breathO
see now the time that rises pale unstain'dJ
the fixed light that charms the fields of deathO
A little yet a little wait O filesR2
obedient to my dumb command the browS2
may waive its frigid lordliness the wilesR2
of the spent heart becloud it wait and thouS2
dark presence large above the passing worldJ
biding the full hour of the fated strokeH2
ere in the sudden gust of truth be whirl'dJ
the veils of kindly Maya leaf or smokeH2
let their suspense of smouldering glory beT
yet mirror'd in this mind's unruffled poolT2
or e'er beneath the implacable certaintyT
of icy light and thought's untarnish'd ruleT2
the vacant world stand rigid let me yetJ
this vesper ween I am not all aloneU2
and ponder with luxurious regretJ
over the singing golden morning flownU2
soon soon enough the spirit unreprovedJ
shall on its proud predestin'd circle rangeV2
in dread indifferent solitude removedJ
above the poignant pageantry of changeV2
and the broad brows whose curves are centuriesW2
arise of Isis' carven front supremeA
that bids the lucid soul in silence freezeW2
the glittering crystal of my winter dreamA
