The Lambs Of Grasmere, 1860 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE GHIJKLMN OPQPRSTS UVWVXMYZ

The upland flocks grew starved and thinnedA
Their shepherds scarce could feed the lambsB
Whose milkless mothers butted themC
Or who were orphaned of their damsB
The lambs athirst for mother's milkD
Filled all the place with piteous soundsE
Their mothers' bones made white for milesF
The pastureless wet pasture groundsE
-
Day after day night after nightG
From lamb to lamb the shepherds wentH
With teapots for the bleating mouthsI
Instead of nature's nourishmentJ
The little shivering gaping thingsK
Soon knew the step that brought them aidL
And fondled the protecting handM
And rubbed it with a woolly headN
-
Then as the days waxed on to weeksO
It was a pretty sight to seeP
These lambs with frisky heads and tailsQ
Skipping and leaping on the leaP
Bleating in tender trustful tonesR
Resting on rocky crag or moundS
And following the beloved feetT
That once had sought for them and foundS
-
These very shepherds of their flocksU
These loving lambs so meek to pleaseV
Are worthy of recording wordsW
And honor in their due degreesV
So I might live a hundred yearsX
And roam from strand to foreign strandM
Yet not forget this flooded springY
And scarce saved lambs of WestmorelandZ
